The Portland Chess Club (PCC) was established in 1911 and has served as a center of chess in the Portland community for more than a century. PCC recently moved to a new home at Montgomery Park, where the cost of maintaining the club is significantly higher. To support PCC and help strengthen the local chess community, Chess A2Z will host a monthly Open & Scholastic Tournament Series at PCC, with 50% of the tournament profits donated to PCC. The series is designed for scholastic players who are ready for longer, more serious tournament games, while also welcoming adult players. By playing in the series, participants are also directly supporting Portland Chess Club and helping this historic organization continue serving the Portland chess community for years to come.
Sections
Players may play up one section, but may not play down. ScheduleAll sections will play a 4-round Swiss, G/45;d5.
Actual round and award times may vary slightly. There will be no on-site check-in. First-round pairings will be posted before the tournament begins. Chess A2Z Fair Play & Code of Conduct
By registering for any Chess A2Z event, players and families agree to uphold the highest standards of honesty, sportsmanship, and fair competition in both over-the-board (OTB) and online play. All moves must reflect the player’s own thinking and effort.
Over-the-Board (OTB) Events
During OTB tournaments, players may not use cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, or any electronic devices in the playing area. The use of chess engines, databases, notes, or any form of outside assistance is strictly prohibited. Players may not discuss games in progress with anyone. Parents and spectators must remain outside designated playing areas unless authorized.
Violations may result in game forfeiture, removal from the tournament, disqualification from prizes, suspension from future Chess A2Z events, or additional action deemed necessary to protect tournament integrity.
Online Events
Online tournaments require enhanced fair play standards. Players must compete without the use of engines, second devices, outside assistance, or communication with others. Players must compete only on their own account.
If monitoring is required, players must comply with Zoom or other supervision requirements. The player’s face and playing area must remain visible when requested. Headphones and private communication devices are not permitted. The playing environment must be quiet and free from outside interference.
All games may be reviewed by the hosting platform’s Fair Play Team, such as Chess.com or Lichess. Prize-winning games may undergo additional review by Chess A2Z.
Online Account Violations
If a player’s account is closed or sanctioned by a hosting platform for fair play violations, Chess A2Z may disqualify the player from results and prizes. Any prize money must be returned. The player may also be suspended from future events.
Sportsmanship
All players, parents, and coaches are expected to treat opponents and tournament staff respectfully, accept tournament rulings professionally, and avoid disruptive or unsportsmanlike behavior. Chess A2Z events are learning environments, and integrity is valued above trophies.
Authority
Chess A2Z reserves the sole right to interpret fair play findings, adjust results when necessary, withhold or revoke prizes, and impose sanctions to protect the integrity of its events. Decisions by the Chief Tournament Director or Fair Play Committee are final.

- 1st Place: $100, 2nd Place: $60, 3rd Place: $40 (based on 40 paid entries, the prize fund is adjusted proportionally if there are a different number of paid players, total prize of $100 is guaranteed)
- Medals for players finishing with a plus or even score.
- Cash-prize winners may choose a trophy instead of the cash prize.
U1200 and U800
- Trophies for the top 5 finishers in U1200 and U800.
- Medals for players finishing with a plus or even score.
Complimentary Entries
To help make tournament chess more accessible, Chess A2Z offers complimentary entries to scholastic players in the following groups:
• Female players
• Players from low-income families
• Players with a published USCF rating of 399 or below
• Players with a published USCF rating of 1200 or above
Complimentary entries are limited to the first 20 eligible registrations combined across all categories and are available on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning approximately two months before the tournament.
